The Natural Language and Dialogue Systems (NLDS) Lab at the University of California, Santa Cruz focuses on computational modeling of dialogue and dynamic adaptation of system dialogue behavior in three areas: spoken dialogue systems, dialogue in online chat forums and debates, and dialogue in games, particularly serious games in health and education.
These research foci are represented in current projects, including SpyFeet, Character Creator, Skipper, and Persuasion in Dialogue. Our current projects for dialogue in games and spoken dialogue systems are directed towards mobile games and phone-based dialogue systems, where smartphone sensors can support personalization to the individual user, as well as dynamic adaptation to the physical context.
