    Conflict, Anxiety, and Hesitation in Virtual Characters

    Abstract Much of the behavior we find most expressive in humans is due to neural systems we share with other social mammals. These systems provide an interesting alternative starting point for virtual characters to rational deliberation. In this talk, I’ll discuss simulating two such systems: Gray and McNaughton’s neuropsychological model of anxiety, and Bowlby’s theory of attachment.

  • Monday, December 8, 2014 - 3:30pm

    Abstract: In this talk I will describe the main characteristics of MEXICA, a computer agent for plot generation. I will show how a computational representation of emotions is employed to progress a story in a coherent way and generate novel situations. Then, I will explain how MEXICA has evolved in order to evaluate its own outputs and generate narratives in collaboration with other agents. Finally, I will briefly describe how we are integrating MEXICA with other creative systems.
