The goal of the Augmented Design Lab at the University of California, Santa Cruz is to improve our human capacity to perform a wide range of design activities. The research approach of the laboratory focuses on developing basic understandings of the building blocks of design, as well as creating computational assistants that enhance the capacity of humans to perform design activities. In the domain of computer games, we are interested in creating interesting spaces for gameplay by exploring how genre games utilize their levels and through the procedural generation of levels. Current projects include exploring level design patterns and their relation to player behavior, and a mixed-initiative level design tool for 2-D platformers that allows a human and a computer to jointly produce a fully-playable level.
